APIDA Heritage Month Kickoff

My contributions to the success of the event

  • Served as Co-Director of Programming

    • Plan and facilitate an engaging program to kickoff APIDA Heritage Month

    • Reach out to APIDA organizations and other on-campus resources to host events for APIDA Heritage Month

    • Manage event and delegate tasks to APC (Asian Presidents' Council) officers

Purpose of the Event

To celebrate and kickoff APIDA Heritage Month by showcasing APIDA organizations on campus, APIDA talents, and available resources for APIDA students.

To educate students about APIDA culture and heritage.

Reflection and Takeaway

This was one of APC's biggest events of the year and it is to celebrate all of the APIDA heritage on culture. Though APIDA Heritage Month is traditionally celebrated in May, we celebrate and host events throughout April to allow APIDA students to celebrate their culture and heritage during the school year as the rest of other minority groups on campus such as Hispanic Heritage Month and Black History Month.

While planning this event, I took all of my past experiences to make this event a success. In the end I think I did a lot better with communicating effectively with my team members to delegate tasks and align our goals and intentions for this event. I think I also did well in contacting performers and organizations to booth at our event because our attendees really enjoyed what we had to offer at the event. The photo booth was also a really nice touch to the event because it gave printed pictures people could take home to remember our event. The pictures had our logo on them too!

A few things I wish I could have taken more into consideration was the performance times and how to keep people to stay longer at our event. The beginning of our event was packed because we did not distribute food yet, however, once people got their food, a lot of people left afterwards. I was also having trouble getting performers to RSVP to come in at an earlier time of the event because they said they had a conflict in schedule. By the time the later performers got to perform, there were only a few people at the end to watch them perform. I think for future events, I need to stick to my deadline and have more strict requirements for performances so that I have performances more evenly spread out. I also need to wait to distribute food to retain attendees throughout the event.
